Double glazing contracts commit you to thousands of pounds of spend and weeks of work on your home. Never sign the same day β and never sign without these 10 things in writing.
The 10-point pre-signing checklist
- Fixed total price β no “estimated” wording. VAT shown separately.
- Itemised breakdown β product, labour, scaffolding, disposal, FENSA cert all listed separately.
- Product specification β frame brand (Rehau, Deceuninck, Veka), energy rating (A++/A+/A), glass type (argon-filled, low-e), PAS 24 security.
- Start and completion dates with compensation clause for unexcused delays beyond 2 weeks.
- Payment schedule β deposit (max 25%), interim (on delivery), final (post-install inspection).
- 14-day cooling-off period β your legal right under Consumer Contracts Regulations 2013 for doorstep sales.
- Insurance-backed warranty β 10 years, covering both product and workmanship.
- Installer credentials β FENSA/Certass membership number printed on the contract.
- Making-good clause β who’s responsible for plaster or external render repair during install.
- Cancellation terms β deposit-protection details (FENSA scheme is standard).
Red flags to reject
- “Valid today only” pricing β legitimate quotes last 14β30 days
- Deposits above 25% β never hand over most of the money upfront
- Vague product spec (“standard uPVC” with no frame brand or rating)
- Cash-only payment β lose Section 75 chargeback protection
- Verbal promises not reflected in the written contract
